monday, M&i are going to see the Red Sox play Tampa Bay.
then, on thursday, JJ is taking me to the Patriots/Giants preseason game to celebrate day 11323. that should be fun too.

as i turned off the offramp on my way to this office (i'm no longer in exile), a guy on a bike grabbed onto my bumper and i helped (unknowingly) pull him up the hill. when he saw that i spotted him in the mirror, he let go and thanked me. i waved thru the open sunroof.

i started to write out a fairly lengthy blog about the weekend events, but now, i don't really feel like posting it. i think in part because it's taken me longer to actually write it, and in part because i'm pretty tired right now. and frustrated.
so, in a (large) nutshell:

i'm pretty sure i've said it before, but i'll say it again. to all you survey people out there who have the balls to try and call me, please heed the following:
i think i said i'd post something about the continuing construction saga that surrounds my home.
i present 3 pictures for your entertainment. the first one was taken just before i left for work on friday, ~20 mins before the pair of 90lb. jackhammers arrived.
the following picture was taken that evening when i got home. the damage isn't quite as much as i thought it was going to be, but it was good enuff for KO i guess. i thought the original plan was to remove the whole thing. KO did say they found a beer can and a newspaper from 1973, so it's a safe bet that's when it was installed.
the final picture was taken wednesday morning. KO finished building the steps on monday, but the top step had a shorter rise to the landing, and after talking to a friend, he decided that he needed to even the rises out (logic being if you are going to take a digger off of the steps, the first one is a good one to do so). so he spent tuesday evening repairing his newly built steps. so the ones in the picture are actually steps v2.0. and they are a bit easier to navigate, so i think it was a good choice. 
so, all in all, kudos to KO for getting this put together and braving the heat, humidity and rain to get this finished. as you can see, it's not completely done as the railings need to be constructed, but for the moment, it's done. once it is really done, i'll post the final product.
bonus points goto LO for helping KO saturday (in the heat and humidity) when she would have preferred to have been shopping on the tax-free weekend.
lesse. last comment was on War of the Worlds. still 'Meh'. i can't say i was overly impressed. there were a few moments, but all in all, it really was rather lacking. worth what i paid to see it ($0) so i'd say it was worth what i paid. certainly not the summer blockbuster it was made out to be. i guess it did ok in the box office when all is said and done.
so that leaves friday. not much too it. went to S&R's Annual Summer BBQ on saturday. that was fun. M was hit on by TK Jr. chatted with friends from work. had a good time.
day 11323 arrived on sunday. had a nice quiet day w/M. did a little shopping, but for all that MA was having a 'tax free weekend', it wasn't until nearly 9pm that i actually bought something that was taxable. (some cleaning stuff and a new coffee table) nice dinner at Navy Yard Bistro. (our waiter was the guy in blue sitting at the bar in the picture) M's crispy duck was a little too salty, but otherwise it was good. it was raining lightly when we got there, but when we left, it was a lot heavier. all of the fun heavy thunderstorms were to the south of boston, so i missed out on all of them. TK saw lightning strike his neighbor's front lawn. lucky bastard...
work today was ok, and ended on somewhat of a higher note than normal. my biggest problem of late has been trying to get our new laptops imaged. for some reason, around the 300mb mark, it just freezes. so after spending most of the day fighting with it i decided to see what would happen if i put the hard drive into one of the old laptops. i was able to pull 2 images from the drive w/o a problem. the only thing i can think of is that something is freaking out at the idea of dumping the data at gig speed, but by slowing it down to 100mb speed, things seemed to stablize. i haven't tested restoring the image yet, but hopefully i'll get the chance to do that tomorrow.
had a nice chat w/RP tonight. she bought a place w/S and after much trial, tribulation and delays, they are finally moving in. after many delays, they were sposed to move in june, but as things happen, they only signed papers 2 weeks ago. so congrats to them.
temps today were much nicer than the humid 90's of the last week. the current forecast seems to indicate that things are going to be nice this week and this weekend, the return of the muggies. ho hum.
KO (landlord) has finally reached a point where i can use the steps to get in and out. i'll post pictures of things in the next day or so of where things were friday morning (pre-jackhammer), evening (post-jackhammer) and now (longer than expected build). so far it looks pretty good. the landing is a little lower, so the top step is shorter than the others, but a few trips up and down and i'm sure i won't notice. KO is pleased because once he removes the old railing, there will be nothing attached to the house, and it's the only thing that is plumb. but he admitted that it took a lot longer than expected. i expected it to go longer, so it was nice to arrive home tonight and be the first person to actually use them. should be a bit safer than the concrete block that was (and is still in part) there. it's certainly a lot easier going in and out the front (not really, but for me it is i spose) entrance than down the back steps which are steep and narrow.
well, i'm tired. been a long weekend.
i stopped by a gas station on the way home to feed the car, and the pump was out of paper, so it put a note up on its screen saying to see the attendent inside. so i head inside and after getting my receipt, a kid (6-7 years old) opened the door for me, i said 'thank you' and he replied 'you're welcome'.
maybe there's hope after all...
willy fungus in our stupid office dropped his laptop off. so this afternoon BM calls me to ask if i have had a chance to look at it as there is some patient info that needs to be taken off of it. so the conversation goes something like this:
Mol: what?
BM: no one told you about this?
Mol: told me what?
BM: oh no, i hope it still isn't in the cabinet. hold on, i'll call you right back.
2 minutes pass
BM: it's right here. there is a problem with the 'T' key.
Mol: ok, that doesn't help me much.
BM: i'll see if i can send it back with RB. if i can, can you look at it first thing tomorrow? there's some patient info we need off of it.
Mol: ok, i'll see what i can do.
so, fortunately, RB stops by the office as he has some stuff to attend to, so i now have the laptop. and after debating for a little while, i decided to see what the problem is. well, the 'T' key is popped off, but fortunately taped on, so i replace it. it's a little tricky if you don't know what you are doing, but pretty easy. quick fix.
i start the laptop. it starts beeping at me. fuck it. it can wait. a little while later, i decide that i'll take a look at it again. some keys don't seem to want to type. pull out my USB keyboard. that lets me in. only as i plug the keyboard in, i notice that the laptop had been DROPPED ON A HARD SURFACE.
normally, if you drop something on an object, it dents the item. or if it's plastic, it cracks it. i've seen enuff cracked laptops here to know the difference. but when a piece of the case is clearly snapped off, you know it's been dropped.
of course there is no mention of this. so now i'm left in a quandry of what to say to this fucking idiot. he really is a fucking idiot. thick as a brick. as sharp as a butter knife. slow as a 90 year old great-grandmother driving in the speed lane of a major highway on a sunday afternoon. slow like the LA freeway during rush hour. slow like a snail. i'd try to explain to him what happened, but he just wouldn't comprehend it. and SOMEHOW, he managed to get onto This Old House. (back in the bob vila days) i've never known anyone who has been on the show, and i'm curious as hell to find out what it was like, but this is the ONE person i don't even DREAM of mentioning it to. he is SOOOOOOOOO dry (white toast) and has this droning voice that makes you want to jump off a bridge.
anyways, i'm irritated. esp as he should NEVER have been given a laptop in the first place, he never uses it (except to break it obviously), and when he does, i've heard that his documentation is so piss poor, that he'd be better off NOT documenting his visits. the few that he does.
most of the time he just sits his ass in front of a PC that is sposed to receive patient data (which thankfully is GOING AWAY). and you know what? it took him nearly a WEEK to realize that his WinFax wasn't working. well, the modem isn't going to work if the PHONE LINE IS DEAD YOU FUCKING IDIOT! i had to laugh at his voice mail when he realized this "i...uhhh...my winfax isn't working. i'm not sure if it is related to the new phone system or not, but i can tell you when it stopped working"
there are a few people here that drive us to drink, and he is near the top of that list. it's a rotating list of people that drive us to drink, but he is one of the painfully consistant leaders of the 'drive the IS department to drink' list.
i'll stop for the moment. i'm sure you all know about these types of idiots.
