oh my...

i just saw a commercial for this

First Time Ever!
New Legal Tender $20 Commemorative has TWO denominations to Commemorate the Anniversary of 9/11...

Announcing the special release of the double-dated 2001-2008 September 11 Silver Leaf Coin-Certificate.

Like a Silver Certificate which is payable in silver, this privately minted Coin-Certificate is payable in coin-of-the-realm. Struck in .999 pure silver leaf, its giant size - 3 1/8" x 7 3/8" - dwarfs every U.S. note currently in circulation. Most important, it is the first time ever that two separate denominations have been used to add up to its full $20 face value: it displays 9 and 11 on its front along with the Twin Towers to commemorate the World Trade Center tragedy. The back depicts the stunning design of the new Freedom Tower. Authorized by the government of Liberia, it will never be released for circulation - available now through a special striking for collectors only.

i had to wonder a few things. first, where is liberia?

and second, and my bigger question, what is the currency that liberia uses, and what is the exchange rate?

may i just say OOF!

according to the fine Xe currency calculator:

Live rates at 2008.07.03 02:47:36 UTC
20.00 USD = 1,260.00 LRD
United States Dollars ----- Liberia Dollars
1 USD = 63.0000 LRD ----- 1 LRD = 0.0158730 USD

therefore, this $20 LRD silver certificate is actually worth....

Live rates at 2008.07.03 02:49:36 UTC
20.00 LRD = 0.317460 USD
Liberia Dollars ----- United States Dollars
1 LRD = 0.0158730 USD ----- 1 USD = 63.0000 LRD

and yes, the commercial showed the 'not affiliated with the U.S. government or U.S. Mint' disclaimer at the end.

OOPS!

yay starbucks

shortly after starbucks retooled their coffee making process (that shut down their stores for an afternoon), people started posting what the changes were. i noticed some of the changes (which i feel were positive) and one afternoon i was getting a large ice latte and i noticed that the barista making it dumped 3 shots into my drink, yet had pulled 4, so i made an off hand comment about it going to waste. he informed me that the large only had 3 shots, and they are supposed to charge for a 4th shot, even tho the machine makes them 2 at a time. but sometimes you can ask for the 4th shot while they are making it and they will dump it in. he did say that the best time to ask is when they aren't busy (and by implication nicely). so i thanked him and tucked that away in the back of my head for future use (i've asked a few times, and it's never been an issue).

so yesterday afternoon, i figured i would enjoy it and had semi-forgotten about the 4th shot until the girl making my large skinny ice latte asked:

would you like to make your non-fat ice latte a quad?

who am i to turn down such an offer.

random picture of the moment: passing storm

passing storm that had promise according to the weather radar. instead, we just got some rain rather than the joyous thunder and lightning, but i tried to get some pictures and this was the best of the bunch.

Go fuck yourself.

i've been told this many times, certainly my parents were the first to tell me this, so i'll give them the credit.

If you can’t find anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

taken during my daily display of human idiocy(tm) this morning.

lots of red lights.

i wonder what those pieces make up. i saw a similar truck the other day with the same type of pieces and wondered.

cliffs along rte 93 south

pleased with this picture, altho slighly misframed. but not bad for how fast i had to take the picture. i liked that the trees that are around this one are full and lush, and then you have the grizzled bark of this one standing proudly above them.

bitchin' stormy afternoon

stopped by market basket to pick up some frozen lunches and just before i got there, the heavens opened up and visibility went from clear and visible to i could barely see in front of me with my wipers on high. a few minutes later, i pulled into the partially flooded parking lot at market basket and spent the next 20 or so mins sitting in my car enjoying the passing thunderstorm. just missed by about 2 seconds a picture of a nice lightning bolt. and a few minutes after parking, i heard a pop which turned out to be the building losing partial power. when the rain stopped enough, i headed in and while waiting in line with my frozen lunches, the building lost all power except for the generator powering the registers and the emergency lights.

the first picture was shot facing south, the second is a picture of the building sign on the fritz, and my first ever youtube vid (it's not very exciting) of the sign behaving all glitchy. (it was off when i left the store.)

R.I.P. George Carlin

JJ & i saw him in lowell a few years ago and had a good time. he is definitely one of the comedy greats who will be missed. and with that, even tho it is a hack thing to do, i give you the one thing that everyone wanted him to say.

Thank you for the laughs.

i received a brief email from M that simply stated "sideways rain!". we didn't have the sideways rain, but it was POURING. (yes, that is a touch of blue sky over the roof of a doomed building)

taken during my daily display of human idiocy(tm). i recognized it as a front loader, but wondered why it had a large fluid filled tank on the back. then i got around it and realized that it was probably the hydraulic fluid that drove this beast.

stopped by chez target on the way home tonight. when i went in, it was sunny and clear, like the right side of the first picture (shot looking west). when i came out 15 minutes later, i saw dark clouds on the left (west/southwest). and it started to rain. i'm pleased (and surprised) that the crappy camera was able to catch the light streaming.

the second shot is looking southwest as i was starting to feel the rain fall. wasn't heavy or last long, but it was enough to deter me from enjoying a nice ice coffee that i would have obtained at the said starbucks in the picture. (it does have a drive-thru but i wanted to walk over.)

is there a perfect album?

last night i was listening to Vast's Visual Audio Sensory Theater and thinking about how it's one of those albums that i just like pretty much all the way through. so i started to ponder what other albums that i listen to that i would consider to be a 'perfect album'.

my definition of a 'perfect album' is pretty much a CD that i can put on that i listen to from start to finish without wanting to skip tracks. and if i want to keep listening to it, all the better.

i tried to think of other albums (and there are quite a few), but the only ones i could think of last night was Garbage Version 2.0 and Nirvana Nevermind & MTV Unplugged in New York.

i'll try to think of others, but in the mean time, what do you consider to be a perfect album?

Lemmy and Page join forces

Published: 18 Jun 2008
ROCK lords LEMMY and JIMMY PAGE got on so famously at the MOJOs afterparty that they decided to swap numbers.

MOTORHEAD frontman Lemmy and LED ZEPPELIN axe maestro Jimmy were deep in conversation during most of the bash and they clearly intended to continue their conflab at a later date.

But their efforts to swap details were hampered by technology — because neither of the ageing duo could use their mobile phones properly.

One amused onlooker revealed last night: "The pair of them spent an age looking both amazed and confused as they attempted to stab contact numbers into their mobiles.

"They looked like two old cavemen discovering some shiny new objects in the forest."

But a monumental Led Zep/Motorhead hook-up may still be on the cards — because the old-timers gave up their struggle with the phones and scrawled their respective digits on beer mats before parting ways.

The party, at the Parker McMillan club, opposite the awards venue, went on long into the night.

NICK CAVE’s dapper band THE BAD SEEDS toasted their Best Album triumph by demolishing a bottle of bourbon between them.
