nitwit

according to the clock on my laptop, it's 735am. i should still be asleep, but thanks to the holiday we call 'labor day' and a nitwit, i'm up.

i'm not annoyed at the garbage men for picking the trash up on a morning when i'd rather be sleeping, i'm used to it so i'm generally pretty good at falling back asleep. like most areas i've lived, if there is a holiday, trash gets bumped a day, and friday is our usual day. so a few times a year, garbage is picked up on saturday. it's worse in the summer because i'll have a window open (my problem this morning), but then they go away and i'll doze off.

this morning however, they came a little later than usual (45-60 mins later) and just as i was dozing back into blissful slumber, my phone rings. so i groggily reach for it and make a vain attempt at recognizing the caller, but as i'm also on call this weekend, if someone else in the department calls me, it might be their number.

so i answer it only to have someone ask me if linda is here. so in a very groggy voice, i reply, no, wrong number. he did at least say he was sorry. and i spend the next 10 mins trying to fall back asleep. didn't happen and rather than try and force myself to go back to sleep, i am now up.

tired.

groggy.

and annoyed. this will pass, but for the moment, i'm annoyed.

the only saving grace is that the pager didn't go off at some ungodly hour. i should be mostly safe for the rest of the day now. mostly.

(points to someone who picks up that modified reference. now i'm less annoyed.)

feeling better

lotsa sleep and some lazy laundry seems to have helped, so i'm not feeling as shitty as i was. unfortuately, it appears that M caught my bug so she's starting to feel how i did the other day. and she's overseas on business so she can't call into work sick. sorry dear :-(

fucking sickness

i'm not quite sure what it is, but at least in part i'm feeling a little better. this weekend i seem to have contracted some bug that reminded me that i really can get sick from time to time. saturday/sunday were nothing more than a little tickle and the occasional cough, but by sunday, i was becoming congested.

yesterday was pretty miserable all in all. fortunately i have stuff to help with the congestion and pressure, but for much of the afternoon i was out of it. and now this morning, i'm up early, and my throat is scratchy because i've been coughing up a pretty storm.

whee.

no more croc hunter.

Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin was killed today by a sting ray.

the offical statement is here

Australia Zoo

Media statement – 4 September 2006

Steve Irwin

At 11am today, the 4th September 2006, Steve Irwin was fatally wounded by a stingray barb to his heart whilst filming a sequence on Batt Reef off Port Douglas for his daughter’s new TV series. Emergency services were called from Cairns Rescue Base and met Croc One, Steve’s rescue vessel at Low Isle on the Great Barrier Reef. The Croc One crew performed constant CPR during the thirty minute dash to Low Isle, but the medical staff pronounced Steve dead at approx. 12 noon.

His producer and closest friend, John Stainton said on Croc One today, "The world has lost a great wildlife icon, a passionate conservationist and one of the proudest Dads on the planet. He died doing what he loves best and left this world in a happy and peaceful state of mind. Crocs Rule!"

looks like word is getting out. a few minutes ago i could hit his site with the official statement, but not any longer.

today's driving lesson(s)

well, i spose 2 really. yesterday on my way into the office after spending some time in one of our other offices, there was a guy in a BMW in the right lane (the slow lane folks, speed lane is on the left) and he went flying by me (i was going ~70mph) and then he started making some quick (and risky) lane changes just so he could keep going way to fast for traffic and he winds in the left lane (that's the speed lane) only to wing his way back and go diving into an exit (on the right). i hadn't slowed down and you know what? i was ~7 seconds behind him.

i really have to wonder if those 7 seconds are really that valuable. he certainly thought so, but it was a shame that the cops that will sit there during the morning commute weren't there at that time.

and today's lesson is:

don't cut off a dump truck.

on the way home today, traffic was pretty heavy (nothing new) but moving and behind me for a while was a dump truck. i reached a spot where things were a little more open so i sped up a bit (only to slow back down a few moments later) which opened up a bit of a gap between the dump truck and my car. all of a sudden, i hear a truck horn sound and i see a livery car pulling in front of the dump truck. unfortunately, when this guy did his lane shift, he didn't wait an extra moment to give a little more room so he basically cut the truck off.

d'oh!

as it happened, the right lane (the slow lane) cleared and the next thing i saw in my rear view mirror was the dump truck come flying up and then cut the livery car off. ouch. it was close, but funny how the livery car all of a sudden started leaving space between him and the dump truck.

and now for something completely different

late night funny

i haven't watched letterman much but last night i saw a little bit that he did that was titled "Great Moments in Presidential Speeches". it showed 3 from 3 presidents.

in order:

  1. Franklin D. Roosevelt: "All we have to fear, is fear itself"
  2. John F. Kennedy: "Ask not, what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country."
  3. George W. Bush: "I think I saw a guy spittin' in a can"

and some video humor for you.

and so it begins...

GA just came out and asked if it was ok to start migrating data from old servers to our new ones in preparation of the active directory upgrade that is just about to happen. i just saluted and off he went back to the server room to kick things off. and so begins a new chapter in the IS department here.

the last 30 mins or so were kind of restful. things are quiet enuff at this time of day that i semi-dozed off. heeheehee.

and in preparation for tomorrow, i have a nice 19" dell LCD monitor on my desk. it's purty. and i can't keep it says DH. but i can use it this weekend to watch Pinky and The Brain which was supplied to me by my younger westward sibling. (anyone interested in getting me Animaniacs is welcome to)

but basically all i need to do is be here. DH wants an IS presence while GA & co. do their voodoo so i get to sit here for most of the day tomorrow, so i'll watch Pinky, read more of Chapterhouse: Dune. and i also need to start sifting thru the 400+ pictures M&i took on our left coast adventure the other week. so that is my plan for tomorrow. i'm hopeful that we'll be able to get everything done tomorrow, but as they didn't touch the new exchange box today (GA said they might be able to start building it during downtime this afternoon), i have the feeling that won't be done until tomorrow with the full upgrade done until sunday. that sucks as it kills my entire weekend. oh well. the price i have to pay to get the title. at least they are doing all the work, so if something gets fucked up (they swear it won't), it's their fault and not mine. i'm kinda glad that i'm not doing the hands on migration. it's a lot of work. fortunately they have done this a few times, so they have some sense of what to look out for. it's really only a few servers that are going to be truly affected, and the rest should just fall into place.

i'll try and put together some sort of summary of our west coast adventures as well, but we had a really good time in both PDX and SFO, so as trips go, it was really good. never been to either place, and we liked both. flights between BOS and LAS sucked, but the shorter flights were a little better, well, flying into PDX from LAS was rough, but more because we were tired of flying by that point.

anyways, i'll try to write something up, and maybe a few pictures as well. more later, maybe.

depressing?

what the fuck does that mean? WGBX 44 (pbs) is showing Austrailian Pink Floyd (very cool of them, heard, but hadn't seen them yet) and some nitwit during the pledge break (it's that time of the year) called it 'depressing' that Dark Side of the Moon came out in 1973.

how in the holy fuck is that depressing? the fact that we continue to listen to it 33 years later proves that it is one of the classic albums of all time. 740+ weeks on the billboard chart, millions of copies sold, the fact that 1 in 14 people under the age of 50 own a copy (according to the wiki DSotM entry) is depressing? i love the album (but prefer Wish You Were Here or Animals) and enjoy listening to the umpteen versions of it i have. live (1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1994), studio, Pink Floyd, The Machine, Roger Waters, quadrophonic, whatever. it is just a classic, and one of my favorite ways to listen to it is the quad mix. kill the lights. plug in the DVD, close my eyes and turn it up.

how is that depressing? it's 45 minutes of refresh and recharge.

depressing.

you fucktard assclown.
